About the Photos

Our holdings include hundreds of glass and film negatives/transparencies that we've scanned ourselves; in addition, many other photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs) in the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) They are adjusted, restored and reworked by your webmaster in accordance with his aesthetic sensibilities before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here. All of these images (including "derivative works") are protected by copyright laws of the United States and other jurisdictions and may not be sold, reproduced or otherwise used for commercial purposes without permission.

I Did It My Way

I Did It My Way

I realize this isn't how most kids would use a tricycle. But you see, what I really wanted to do was play "driving a car," only I didn't have one of those. So I made do with my big brother's old trike; I'm pretending the real wheel is the steering wheel. You see. Around 1949. Look at those cuffs and that waistline; my mother was planning on my getting a lot of use out of those jeans.

1918 Flu Epidemic

Masks like this were a familar sight during the 1918 flu pandemic. This is my aunt Mary on the left with some of her friends.

Union Artillery Man

Union Artillery Man

CDV of a gritty looking Union soldier. Looks to be an artillery man. Notice his rough looking hands. Taken in Boston by Hussey on 556 Washington Street.
