At Rockaway: 1938

This was taken in 1938, during the depression. At a time when my family was quite poor, my father managed to rent a small room at Rockaway Beach in Queens, N.Y. With four children, mother and father in the family, I found myself often sleeping on a makeshift bed made with two chairs. In the picture are my father, Jack; mother, Sarah; younger brother, Mike; and sister, Esther. We all enjoyed the beach. View full size.
