My two younger brothers and myself waving at the train which passed by twice a day on the track across the road from our grandparent's home. Morehouse, Missouri, 1967. Kodachrome slide. Any advice on optimal methods to scan slides would be appreciated! View full size.
Did a Lot of Train WavingBut it was back in the early-fifties when I was about the age of the little tyke on the left. I lived in Locust Grove,MD which was right next to a B&O line.
But by the early-sixties we had moved to Baltimore,MD and my train waving days were over. I had to console myself by fist pumping my arm at the big truckers driving through the area. They would usually give a big blast on their air horns.
It makes me wonder. Back then, strangers were so comfortable to wave and toot a horn to just say Hi! It's not like that anymore.
Going...going...gLook at Google satellite image for Morehouse, Mo at ground level; the Missouri Pacific tracks look unused. Go to the lowest elevated view, and the tracks were in the process of being removed. The grade crossings were still in place but the rails elsewhere were being pulled and stacked for the scrap man.
The boys in Morehouse don't wave at passing trains anymore.

My father took this Kodachrome of my mother in 1954 in Riverside (now Windsor) Ontario. My mother trained as a nurse in St. John, New Brunswick, and volunteered as a Nursing Sister in the Canadian military during World War 2. My father enlisted in the Canadian Army and left from Toronto to serve overseas as well. The met in France in 1944 during the Normandy Invasion (D-Day), and were married on 26 July 1945 in Paris, France. They had a short honeymoon in France, returned to their units and were re-united in Canada. Mum was born in 1919 and passed away in 1990, and Dad lives in Toronto at age 91. You can learn more about Canada's Nursing Sisters here.
I can't find the wordsto tell you how beautiful I find this photo. Her pretty face, her sweet smile, her gorgeous red hair, and that exquisite, exquisite uniform. Thank you. Thank you.

1940's in Valparaiso, Indiana. Dad's working on his first car that he bought for $25. I think this is after the war but I'm sure the gearheads among us can tell us the earliest possible year based on the car in the background. The title refers to what my uncle wrote on the slide index. He was more forthcoming with the comedy than he was with dates. From a Kodachrome slide that was too dark so to get the car to show up I adjusted the heck out of the levels in Photoshop. Sorry the background colors seemed to suffer a bit.
Dating by carI recognized the black fastback in the background as a GM product, but a pre-war body style that was used up until 1948 on various models. Online, I couldn't come up with anything with that exact trim package, but the closest was a 1948 Pontiac, except for the rear bumper. The year on the plate of your dad's car looks like it could be either 43, 45 or 48. Excellent shot.
OldsmobileTterrace, you couldn't come up with that exact side trim because it's an Oldsmobile, not a Pontiac. A 1948 I believe, Series 70.

Montreal, 1967. This shot was taken using 35mm Kodachrome with the camera resting on a railing. In the distance, the U.S. pavilion is the Buckminster Fuller dome on the left while the U.S.S.R. pavilion is the brightly-lit dipping roof building on the right. Today, the U.S. pavilion still stands as an indoor arboretum. View full size.
Fuller on fireThe former U.S. pavilion is actually a museum of the environment, called the Biosphere, owned and run by the federal government. The acrylic skin of the geodesic dome (a three-quarter sphere, 200 feet high), caught fire in a welding accident in 1976 and burned off in half an hour, leaving the steel truss structure intact. It remained empty for almost 20 years.

Oldest couple -- not really -- but they are the oldest couple in my family photo collection. Mr. and Mrs. William Meriwether Sr., of rural Blandinsville, Ill. Old-fashioned fashionYour wonderful grandparents look like all the aged relatives I remember as a child -- they seem to have somehow stuck at some moment in time and never changed. I guess it's because of the clothes. My great-aunts and uncles always looked like they walked right out of the 1930s even though it was the early '70s.

On the afternoon of March 29, 1960 I had occasion to ride the Jersey Central Railroad car ferry across the Hudson River into Manhattan. Soon after departing the Jersey City terminal I snapped this photo of the Ferry Wilkes-Barre with its patrons anxiously awaiting the boat to dock.
Not long after I took the photo, a similar shot appeared as the centerfold in the Saturday Evening Post magazine. The post captioned their photo as the "Five O'Clock Sailors," which I thought was totally appropriate. This ferry operation is, of course, long gone from the scene. Time capsuleThis photo is chock-full of awesomeness. The art deco vanity, frilly curtains seen in the mirror, doilies carefully positioned on the vanity, grandma's shiny ribbon skirt and gold-trimmed blouse, her bright red lipstick and big smile...it's all fantastic. It looks like a fur coat is thrown across the bed, so maybe she's getting ready for a night out on the town. I like the way the photographer carefully positioned himself/herself just out of range of the mirror, too.
DecorLove, love, love that vanity. And I remember those decorative tin wastebaskets from my grandfather's house. Nowadays, trash cans are plastic and boring. Great pic!

Diving Bells and Mahi MahiI just had to find out what those two blue cylinders were: diving bells, which were submerged in the tank by hydraulic pistons. The alleged fun was when the pressure holding the bell down was released and the bell shot back up to the surface. But way more fun is the fact that the climactic scene of the final episode of The Fugitive (aired August 29, 1967) was filmed at this park, with Dr. Richard Kimble fighting the one-armed man atop the Mahi Mahi tower.
