I bought this framed photograph at a garage sale. The vehicle appears to be a Lansden Electric. Apparently the photo was taken on a cold day in New York because the passengers are wearing heavy coats and all have rugs over their knees. The Hotel Bartholdi, it seems, was well known in the period, and a search reveals that the Green Car Sight-Seeing Service made photographs available to patrons. This one is 27 inches by 16 inches. I would like to know more about Green Car, the Hotel, and Lansden. View full size.
- Roverdriver in Australia
Lansden ElectricThe Standard Catalog of American Cars lists Lansden Electric in business from 1901-1910. The company was taken over by Maccar (as in Mack trucks) after that. Lansden himself left the company to run the electric truck division of General Motors. The Lansden company made passenger and commercial vehicles but discontinued the passenger vehicles in 1908. They were located in Birmingham, Alabama from 1901-1903. They moved to Newark, New Jersey and continued until 1910.
The guide makes no mention of this particular vehicle however.
The Hotel Bartholdi closed in May 1912.
I have one of these photos as well:

This is a shot on the boat deck of the SS France that my dad took prior to our departure from Pier 88 in New York. Some of the men are intrigue with the two ladies walking in their summer attire. I’m the little guy at the top of the stairs. Not sure what I’m doing with my hand around my eye, but I think I had a small toy telescope. Obviously it wasn’t pointed in the right direction. View full size.
The boy atop the stairsIt looks to me like you're playing with some sort of toy. There's a stick in your right hand, and if you look in front of your shorts there's a white object that seems to be suspended from your left hand. If there's a string going from the stick to your left hand and then down to the suspended object, I'm guessing that it's some sort of toy. Picture's pretty fuzzy when blown up, but are you wearing glasses?
Strange deviceI didn’t wear glasses back then. I started wearing those 44 years later. The photo is from a 35mm slide, so it is difficult to see some details. It could have been a toy gift given to children upon boarding the ship.

Luna Park in Charleston, West Virginia, around 1915. There were many Luna Parks in the U.S., the most famous at Coney Island in New York. This photo is believed to have been taken on the Fourth of July, due to the dress of some of the people (like Uncle Sam). The Park, like many Luna Parks of the day burned down, and was never replaced. The strange streets that are still in use to this very day in Charleston where Luna park stood, are a direct reflection of the walkways there. Today, hundreds of homes sit in its place. Posted by Photoscream - 11/03/2010 - 9:07am -

This is my late mom in the late 1960's (either '67, '68 or '69) lying on the sofa and reading the Sunday Daily News (New York's Picture Newspaper). The bulletin from nearby St. James parish rests on the table, so this was after church. The newspaper back page headline is a mystery in attempting to date this photo. Partially obscured and curved, it appears to have the words Bosox and Tigers, so possibly "Bosox Defeat Tigers", or "Bosox Lose, Tigers Win". Below that, all I can make out is "In Final". In that case, it wouldn't have anything to do with the the 1968 World Series, since that was Cardinals vs Tigers. Unless, what looks like "Bosox" is actually "Gibson". However, Bob Gibson did not pitch any Saturday games in that series, though he did pitch on Sunday, Oct 6. Given it is a NYC paper, they wouldn't have run a headline of a regular season game of a non-NY team, so my guess is that this is 10/6/68, during the 1968 World Series, and the headline was something like "Gibson To Face Tigers....". But I could be wrong. View full size.
Candid MomThis could also be my mother, if we'd had a sofa. She even rather resembles her, though in a version from the mid-1940s. The expression at being snapped unaware, too, and I also speculate she would be similarly less than pleased. But what great memory-evoking shot.
October 1, 1967I think that the paper is reporting the AL pennant race of 1967. On September 30th, the Tigers and Red Sox both won, leaving the Twins and Red Sox tied in the standings, with the Tigers a half game behind. Sunday was the final day of the season, with all three teams playing for a chance at the title. On Sunday, the Tigers would win the first game of their doubleheader, leaving the three teams momentarily tied, before losing the nightcap. At the same time, the Red Sox beat the Twins, giving them the pennant and a trip to the World Series, where they faced Bob Gibson and the Cardinals, as you mentioned. I hope this helps.
