San Francisco, March 1969. Taken from the front passenger seat, US 101 northbound at the Vermont Street exit. Love the Bobbie Gentry and Sammy Davis Jr. Harrah's billboard and the late 1950s Bentley cruising serenely in the southbound lane. View full size.

This is the famous "Cliff House" restaurant in 1959, which, in one form or another, has been a fixture in San Francisco for over a century. Located on the edge of Golden Gate Park, it's still there today in a modernized form. I'm sure it's a great restaurant, but judging from the current prices on the menu I'm guessing that our family of four were just on a sightseeing tour and ate dinner somewhere else! View full size.

I submit this photo for the 60th Anniversary of the end of an American institution, the small city streetcar. Shorpy followers will have undoubtedly noticed that a great many of the early 20th Century streetscape photos show the ubiquitous streetcar which in those days was people's primary means of transportation.
The occasion here was the ceremonial last run of streetcars in Johnstown, PA at 5 PM, Saturday afternoon, June 11, 1960. There were streetcars remaining in other large cities such as Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and San Francisco, but Johnstown was the last of the small city systems to be converted to bus operation.

It's Halloween 1969 and that's me in the Popeye costume. I was in 1st grade and those are my classmates. In those days there were several hundred kids in the school and our parade wound around the school yard and out onto the local neighborhood streets where residents and parents alike stood outside and watched us pass. Dad's second British sports car, after his '52 MG-TD, was this new 1966 MG Midget. After selling the TD in 1956 he bought a new '56 VW, then a used '52 Chevy, then a new '62 Ford Falcon which was traded in for the Midget. Dad really wanted an Austin Healey 3000 so he traded the Midget in for a '67 3000 in early 1968. East Richmond Heights, San Francisco Bay Area, 1966. View full size.

A miner from California went north to British Columbia where a new gold rush was taking place in 1858. His photo is an example of a very early albumen paper print, which could have been taken in San Francisco or Victoria. The picture was cut down, removing the maker's name. Some photographic studios of the time rarely changed the furniture, carpets, and backgrounds. Looking through a thousand mid-nineteenth-century portrait photos has not turned up the studio. Shorpy is renowned for photographic experts. Does anybody recognize the photographer who took the picture? View full size.

This photo was taken of my brother and me on a 1958 visit to Santa's Village near Los Angeles, at Skyforest, near Lake Arrowhead in the San Bernardino Mountains. We lived just south of San Francisco at the time, but all the relatives were in the Los Angelas area, so every year we'd make our annual Christmas trip to LA. As you can see by the clock overhead, Christmas is fast approaching!

There I am in the white shirt and Giants cap riding with my friend Robert. He taught me to ride a bike after getting tired of hauling me around like this. One day he got off the bike and gave me a push and I was solo for the first time! Next-door neighbor Ray stands by as we prepare to launch. Dad's 1962 Ford Falcon at left was soon traded for a new '66 MG Midget and the Midget was soon traded for a new '67 Austin Healey 3000. Mom's new '66 Ford Falcon resides in the garage. This was our house on Claremont Avenue in East Richmond Heights in the San Francisco Bay Area. View full size.
