Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

1954 Buick "Roadmaster" in a 1953 photograph taken as a study for painted illustrations in advertising, sales brochures, etc. View full size.
My Florida grandparents drove a 50's Plymouth station wagon that had nearly the entire floorboards eaten away by salt. It looked a lot like this picture.
By the way, pretty lady! This picture makes her look like she's driving in Heaven, where an angel like her probably ended up by now.
I learned to drive on my Grandmother's '54 Buick Special (4 door sedan), virtually the same interior. The starter was part of the accelerator. You pressed down and it started, then you just used the pedal the same as normal! I was 6'2" and could almost stretch out across the front seat.
I can't believe i am saying this but cute shoes!! And it really doesn't matter where the dashboard is going to hit her because the steering wheel will get there first and it would crush her, it's so big.
It's pointing to her face, not her heart. :D
what a beautiful dashboard
Steering column perfectly designed to impale the heart. Good thing she has those white gloves on!
Great reference! You hardly see the behind-the-scenes work.
