Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

The Kiss. Sometime in the 1950s, likely in Decatur, Illinois. View full size.
far rom the tree. Obviously the tot gets his strut from Mommy! Love the playfulness of youth.
Today, 9/11, was a rough day. I had so many students who lost their parents that day. Then, I saw this wonderful photograph that somehow makes the world "right" today. Thanks Shorpy for the smiles!
The best allegory photo of this 1950s time period, perhaps of that whole period between WWII and The Vietnam War.
This photo makes me so incredibly happy!
Because we hear they're like that in Decatur, Illinois.
I think the kid is angry about the sudden neglect.
Everything about it is perfect -- the near kiss, the kick, the stomping baby. Sex and fun. Love it!
Remember the days when the air was clean and sex was dirty.
The kid will be back after the icky part.
I love the poses. Especially the little baby boomer in the back.
Sums up a generation, doesn't it. A really great picture. Very spontaneous and alive. Thanks, Dave.

This reminds me of the comic strip "Rose Is Rose" -- Rose is always kissing her husband (or vice versa) in unusual positions, and their child, Pasquale, is usually underfoot someplace.
Looks like Red and Kitty Foreman, and little Eric running over to Donna's yard.
Is going to have a sibling in the near future.
