Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

I haven't been on this wonderful website long, but when I see people like this, I just want to wish them well through the years. I hope their lives were/are good ones. This photo is so tender and lovely. I'm not sure I've ever seen a better composed photo of a mother and child. The genuine affection and confidence is evident.
This is a beautiful photo and that's all that needs to be said.
This was taken at about the time the arsenal was first built. It's still in operation today making artillery and so on for the armed services.
