About the Photos

Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

Consistent

Whether an olde shot like this charmer or a modern version, so many times the poor animals look just a tad embarrassed.

Some Edwardians would have stuffed her in this pose. Dogs like to work; hope this pup is more trained in the tradition of William Wegman and his photos than bad sad dog acts. She looks young and possibly restrained, though.

The Look!

The dog looks like he wants a little phone privacy or to have these ridiculous clothes removed.

Trying to find the words

Mondo bizarro!
