About the Photos

Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

Cat Picnic: 1914

1914. "Kittens in costume at picnic lunch." After we're done eating, stick around for fireworks and the six-legged race! Photo by Harry W. Frees. View full size.

Harry Frees took hundreds of these photos, using his own and neighbors' pets. They were used for greeting cards, and published in collections. They were also used to illustrate children's books, including "Four Little Puppies" and "Four Little Kittens," which are still in print.

Um, OK, these cats are dead, right?

Is this not getting creepy?

[Ninety-nine years later it's probably safe to say that, alas, they are no longer with us. Snif. -Dave]
