About the Photos

Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

Probably used to start races.

Two Countries Here

This is still a busy resort area between Port Huron and Mount Clemens, Michigan, along the St. Clair River. We are basically looking north on the U.S. side, with more of Michigan visible behind the bathhouse.

To the right, across the wide river, is Ontario, Canada, accessible then by small ferry boats in nearly every little town, with crossings every half hour.
