About the Photos

Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

Bedtime Story: 1914

Bedtime Story: 1914

1914. "Three kittens in nightclothes, gathered around candlestick." Just the thing to lull you to sleep. Or keep you awake. Photo by Harry W. Frees. View full size.

Them Cats!

I realize the cats in this and similar photos aren't aware of the situation they're shown in here but I have known and loved too many dogs and cats to think that they are not capable of a sense of humor. I know better. And I know that some humans don't have a sense of humor. I still like them 'cause that's what makes them so funny.

So I love seeing these little kittens and pups in their little outfits. And, yes, I love to see the old prints of dogs playing poker.

It's all good.

This Photo Makes Me Sad

It is really sad to realize how little humans have evolved in the past century. One hundred years later, far too many people still think that stupid cat (or dog) pictures/videos are amusing and worth sharing with the rest of the world.

[Tediously trite sentiment abounds. - Dave]

You naughty kittens

You've lost your mittens!

Tell us a story, tell us a story, tell us a story ...

And then we'll go to bed!
