About the Photos

Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

Stair Noir: 1925

Circa 1925. "Stairway in the old Ursuline convent, New Orleans." 4x5 nitrate negative by Arnold Genthe. View full size.

Perfect composition in black and white

An amazing and well framed photograph. It is visually interesting all by itself, but knowing the subject, one wonders about the stories that could be told.

Stairway to Heaven

"There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold and she's buying a stairway to heaven"

Haunting

Yesterday upon the stair,
I met a man who wasn't there.
He wasn't there again today,
Oh, how I wish he'd go away.
