Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

September 1935. "Garrett County, Maryland. Interior of a house." 35mm nitrate negative by Theodor Jung, Resettlement Administration. View full size.
Notice the clothesline over the stove. Extra benefit extracted from the heat -- assuming the clothes didn't fall on the stove and burn.
I am very familiar with 35mm film, and this guy is simply amazing. In fact, I have a real hard time believing that this is not a larger format given the tonal quality of the image, never mind the detail. Just extraordinary!
[We can thank the Shadows & Highlights filter in Photoshop CS3 for a lot of that goodness. - Dave]
My mom's family lived in Garrett County for 150 years. Nice stove.
