At Last!

A South Bend photo on Shorpy. Born and raised here, and still live 20 miles west of where this photo was taken. Previous poster from South Bend described the location accurately. Here's Ike riding in the back of a 1952 Studebaker convertible that same day.

Main Street in downtown South Bend

I'm a South Bend native. This is a view of Main Street across from the St. Joseph County Courthouse, taken from Washington Street. None of the buildings along Main Street stand anymore, thanks to urban renewal in the 70s. Several of the buildings in the background do, however. Among them: the Sherland Building (the tallest building), the National Bank & Trust Co. (white building at right), the Robertsons department store (apartments today), and the federal courthouse (far right, next to the National Bank).

Oh, Look! There's Cousin Lester!

A hundred thirty-fifth from the left, 53rd from the top! Don't that hat suit him, though?

Hoosiers Liked Ike

In the 1952 general election, Indiana voted for the Republican Eisenhower/Nixon ticket overwhelmingly over the Democrats' Stevenson and Sparkman ticket 58% to 41% with the remaining 1% (15,000 votes) going to the Prohibition Party's slate of Stuart Hamblen and Enoch (Nucky) Holtwick.

Hoosiers have favored the Republican candidate in every election since 1952 with the exception of 1964 (Johnson 56%) and 2008 (Obama 49.84%).
