About the Photos

Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

Born too soon

Had he been born 15 years later, Hal Roach would have loved him!

Looks familiar?

Do you think he's a long lost relative of Alfred E Neuman? I think we should be told !!

When I was a boy...

He went on to become someone's grandfather, and can you imagine the stories he told?

Pequeño Malandrín

Se ve que este chiquillo lo pasaba bien.

Incredible

I stared and I stared for seconds... Incredible! The life printed on its face...

Big Grin

Super photo! I'd definitely look for this kid to buy my paper from. What a contagious grin.

"Our Gang" material!

This kid looks like a real piece of work.
