About the Photos

Our holdings include hundreds of glass and film negatives/transparencies that we've scanned ourselves; in addition, many other photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs) in the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) They are adjusted, restored and reworked by your webmaster in accordance with his aesthetic sensibilities before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here. All of these images (including "derivative works") are protected by copyright laws of the United States and other jurisdictions and may not be sold, reproduced or otherwise used for commercial purposes without permission.

Or maybe . . . .

Or maybe people of different body types were allowed to be athletic then?

Looks to be a few teachers running, either that or high school kids back then just looked old.

Could've been my grandmother

She was in high school in 1925 and an athlete. I'm not sure if she ran track, but I know she played tennis and soccer and went on to be a PE major in college. 90 years doesn't seem like such an impressively long time ago any more.

Now Cardozo Education Campus

New and old picts here.

Adolescent obesity 1925

Looks like that newfangled radio is producing too many inactive teens.

Apart from the shorts,

the winner looks somewhat younger, and dare I say it, fitter than the stragglers.

Was this some kind of cruel joke

Or maybe Mother Daughter race day?
