Long gone

The tracks were replaced with roadway in the late 1950s, after the transbay train service ended. That entire Oakland side of the bridge has recently been replaced with a new structure, since the 1989 earthquake exposed its hazardous condition. One of the most famous film images of that event was a car plunging from the upper deck to the lower, because a section of roadway had topped at one end.
