I remember it well!

I and two friends nearly crashed the RNC that year. Climbed a fence way, way outside and almost made it to the hall before being stopped by Security!

I've seen video footage of those early '60s conventions and it's staggering to see how much smoke from all the cigarettes being smoked there is rising to the rafters.
