Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

Scipio, a St. Bernard acquired by Orville Wright in 1917. Photo taken between 1917 and 1928. View full size. 5x7 glass negative by Orville Wright.
Our Heidi is an incarnation of Scipio. Beautiful animals, and like all dogs, devoted as the day is long. Humans have much to learn from them in this respect. It's kind of dark in the background but I can picture Scipio lying there on the carpet in front of a crackling fire while Orville contemplates his next venture.
