Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

July 1939. "Churchyard on annual cleaning up day, Wheeley's Church, Person County, N.C." View full size. Medium-format nitrate negative by Dorothea Lange. Note the homemade twig brooms propped against the pine. From an earlier post, a group shot of the ladies. Is the church, in Gordonton, still there?
My mother tells how "sweeping the yard" was one of her chores as a child growing up in the East Texas Piney Woods. She was not allowed to come to supper till the yard was swept.
My paternal grandmother used to sweep her, um, dirt I guess, just like that.
They sure got that dirt nice and clean !!
According to http://abstusa.com/nc/gordonton , Wheeler's Church is still a landmark in Gordonton. It's one county north of where I sit, and I'm almost sure I've driven past it in the last year or so.
