About the Photos

Our holdings include hundreds of glass and film negatives/transparencies that we've scanned ourselves; in addition, many other photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs) in the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) They are adjusted, restored and reworked by your webmaster in accordance with his aesthetic sensibilities before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here. All of these images (including "derivative works") are protected by copyright laws of the United States and other jurisdictions and may not be sold, reproduced or otherwise used for commercial purposes without permission.

Written on the Wind: 1907

Circa 1907. "Youth with winged hat (Nicholas Giancola)." Platinum print by the Boston-based photographer Fred Holland Day (1864-1933). View full size.

Amazing photographer

I don't think I'd heard of this artist before! He specialized in artistic images like this one. In his day he was the rival of Stieglitz, but much of Day's work was tragically lost in a fire three years before his death. I can't imagine what that must have felt like! He believed photography could be an art form and promoted that idea. He was also a publisher. You can find more of his ethereal images in a google search, and more about him here:

Thanks Shorpy for introducing me to him! Think I'll use some of his look as inspiration for my own photographs.

Haunting Image

Can ponder this beautiful image for hours. Hat is similar to the winged helmet I often wear.
