About the Photos

Our holdings include hundreds of glass and film negatives/transparencies that we've scanned ourselves; in addition, many other photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs) in the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) They are adjusted, restored and reworked by your webmaster in accordance with his aesthetic sensibilities before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here. All of these images (including "derivative works") are protected by copyright laws of the United States and other jurisdictions and may not be sold, reproduced or otherwise used for commercial purposes without permission.

(UHR) Unidentified Handsome Rake

Dave, do we have any idea who this guy is? Also, I think the Handsome Rake tag applies here.

Good for more than just hiking

I imagine those boots were "snakeproof" too. Probably very useful in that rugged, rocky terrain!

It's a hike

Pine Creek Canyon is in the Spring Mountain Range west of Las Vegas. It has a paved parking area on a loop drive, but the hike to the canyon is a pretty hefty one. I'd not try it in July, frankly.

Hidden figures

If you enlarge this picture, it may remind you of those comic page puzzles and workbooks from the past where it asks you to find the hidden objects, faces and figures in the picture. I was never any good at those (still am not) but if you have a good imagination, you may be able to find some mingled into the scenery and branches of the landscape. Of course, as usual, I have found nothing.

SHORPY HISTORICAL PHOTO ARCHIVE | History in HD is a vintage photo archive featuring thousands of high-definition images from the 1850s to 1960s. (Available as fine-art prints from the Shorpy Archive.) The site is named after Shorpy Higginbotham, a teenage coal miner who lived 100 years ago.
