About the Photos

Our holdings include hundreds of glass and film negatives/transparencies that we've scanned ourselves; in addition, many other photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs) in the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) They are adjusted, restored and reworked by your webmaster in accordance with his aesthetic sensibilities before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here. All of these images (including "derivative works") are protected by copyright laws of the United States and other jurisdictions and may not be sold, reproduced or otherwise used for commercial purposes without permission.

Gr8er Eight: 1931

San Francisco circa 1931. "Hudson 8 Club Sedan." Or, as branded by its maker, the "Greater Hudson 8" -- a step up from the previous year's merely Great Eight. 5x7 inch dry plate glass negative by Christopher Helin. View full size.

Classic coat, too

That may be a classic car, but her double-breasted wool coat (probably camel) is as stylish today as it was then.

Be quick about it

Hopefully they got their pictures quickly, and moved the car before it leaked something on the sidewalk. Cars (even new cars) weren't sealed so tightly back then.

On Broadway

The Hudson sedan is parked in front of the Flood Mansion at 2222 Broadway Street in the city.

Very little has changed in the last 87 years, except the once-private residence is now the private school Convent of the Sacred Heart.
