Having spent at least 5 minutes exhaustively researching this, I think this photo was taken on (now) FDR Drive, between 33rd and about 30th Street. NYU's Tisch Hospital is in this spot today. The camera is looking northwest, or relatively west with respect to the Manhattan street grid.
