Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

1923. Assistant Postmaster General John Bartlett's car in Washington after an accident. Bartlett, a former governor of New Hampshire, survived. Details of the wreck, unfortunately, did not. View full size. National Photo Co. Collection.
Most amazing thing is the info that the driver survived. Perhaps he was thrown or jumped from the car early in the incident? Very hard to imagine walking away from this, especially in pre-safety glass days.
That auto looks totally wrecked, hope he wasn't hurt too bad.
