Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

One cold February night your webmaster was faced with a choice: Poignant sepia- tinged Lewis Hine urchin ("says 12 yrs., but it is doubtful") or a 1957 Kodachrome titled "Three Girl Pyramid." After a nanosecond of deliberation, the Oscar for Best Transparency in a 100-Year-Old Photo Blog goes to: "Three Girl Pyramid"! An outstanding achievement and an outstanding photo.
This picture brings me back to vacations spent with my aunt and uncle in Orlando. My little brother actually got to ride in the speedboat that pulled the waterskiers. A memory he still looks back on fondly.
AH! It's a balmy 37 degrees here but this lovely picture is still giving me summer fever!
