Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

July 1937. "Louisiana Negress." View full size. Medium-format nitrate negative and caption by Dorothea Lange for the Farm Security Administration.
It has been posted for several years now, but it stuck in my mind's eye and I had to go back and find it. Maybe a recent comment will attract some new viewers to share my appreciation!
I'd be hard pressed to name a favorite among Lange's work, but this would be near the top. I love the reflected light on the woman's face, the few beads of sweat, the wonderful textures of the hat and the umbrella.
Another wonderful photo Dave. New screensaver...
