Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

A kitchenette apartment! My grandma lived in one during that time.
Russell Lee did not burst into her apartment and catch her by surprise. She must have thought that if someone was going to take pictures of her, she should look nice for the occasion. She succeeded, because we admire her clothes and her self-respect.
