About the Photos

Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

After the Bath: 1909

After the Bath: 1909

New York City municipal lodging house circa 1909. "After the bath." This is the answer to those wondering what you'd wear while your clothes were being fumigated overnight. George Grantham Bain Collection. View full size.

Sort of looks like a picture taken in an early 1900's mental institution.

The man second from the right didn't get his new government-issued socks, apparently.

The guy in uniform looks like he belongs with the Department of Public Corrections instead of Department of Public Charities.

Those tags around their necks must match numbered tags on their clothing undergoing fumigation.
