About the Photos

Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

November 13, 1911. New York City. Our third shot of the heavyweight fighter Carl Morris. Glass negative, George Grantham Bain Collection. View full size.

Look at that face!

He's a prize fighter all right.

Love this picture!

Don't know why this photo is so appealing...I HATE fighting and am SICK of men. Must be the amazing lighting and the hardwood floor and the cool arched doorway. (To be honest, the handsome man probably doesn't hurt!)

Do you suppose this photograph had an early impact on the young Thomas Kinkade?
