Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.
Thank you for the information, I am actually trying to read into it, this photograph was found with a journal written in a different language. Hope to really find other interesting facts by finding someone who may interpret the journal.
Looks like late 1800's. At the time, people posed for photo portraits the same way they did for painted portraits, which took way too long for people to hold a smile.
