They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

I work on 2nd Avenue North in Nashville and just came in from a break with a co-worker. As we crossed this intersection, I told her about this photograph (and Shorpy.com). How I wish it still looked like that.
