About the Photos

Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

The Hungry Americans: 1976

The Hungry Americans: 1976

October 1976, somewhere in England. Holding a piece of good English cheese, I wait for the self-timer to snap, sitting with my friends on the bonnet of our for-hire Volkswagen Golf. Kodachrome slide via Konica Autoreflex T. View full size.

Wensleydale?

Or was it Stilton?

We drove to England, once, while we were living in Germany, arriving in London during heavy traffic. Driving our car on the left side of the road turned us into nervous wrecks. I have always wondered if driving a car with the driver's side on the right would have been easier!

Polo vs. Golf

Great picture. Just one correction, that's not a VW Golf, it's a VW Polo, not imported to the U.S.
