Helmets & Facemasks

I played HS ball at a fairly high level in Texas during the 1950's and early 1960's. We had single and double bar face masks, padded chin straps, etc. Not long before that, sometime in the 1950s, guys played ball like this without face masks. Some of those old maskless helmets were still around in the equipment room.

I often wondered how they did that, given the number of times we took hard blows to the face and head. Guess that broken noses and missing teeth were part of the price those old timers paid to play the game.

No more football

Ah, the days when GW had a football team.
