Our holdings include hundreds of glass and film negatives/transparencies that we've scanned ourselves; in addition, many other photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs) in the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) They are adjusted, restored and reworked by your webmaster in accordance with his aesthetic sensibilities before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here. All of these images (including "derivative works") are protected by copyright laws of the United States and other jurisdictions and may not be sold, reproduced or otherwise used for commercial purposes without permission.

Vintage photos of:
Butte, Montana, in September 1942. 4x5 Kodachrome transparency by Russell Lee, Office of War Information. Anyone see their house here? View full size.
Washington, 1913. "Dr. Freedman -- Children cured by his cure." Regardless of what the story is here (and I have high hopes that we'll find out), this girl looks like a real piece of work. Harris & Ewing Collection glass negative. View full size.
1864. "Chattanooga, Tennessee. Adams Express office and the Crutchfield house with Cameron Hill in the distance." Photographer unknown. View full size.
1917. "District of Columbia traffic. Stop and Go signs." A very new-looking Haynes roadster in Washington crossing Pennsylvania Avenue at 14th Street N.W. Harris & Ewing Collection glass negative. View full size.
The Investment Building in Washington at 15th and K Streets in 1925, shortly after its completion. Home to the barber shop seen here yesterday, the Investment Building was touted as being the first big office building in the East with an underground parking garage. Ten years ago it was torn down and replaced with a new structure designed by Cesar Pelli, who used the original limestone for the street-facing facades, which were propped up during demolition with a framework of steel girders. Except for the modern superstructure peeking over the top, the new Investment Building looks pretty much like the old one. National Photo Company Collection glass negative. View full size.
"Boy Scout training demonstration, 1912." Fifth in our series of bandaged, splinted and faux-injured Scouts. Harris & Ewing glass negative. View full size.
Washington, D.C., 1914. "District of Columbia. Alley clearance slum views." Harris & Ewing Collection glass negative, 5 x 7 inches. View full size.
District of Columbia, 1911. "Negroes. Negro life in Washington." Harris & Ewing Collection glass negative, Library of Congress. View full size.
