Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

Washington, November 5, 1925. "National Apple Week at Walter Reed Hospital." National Photo Company Collection glass negative. View full size.
This was taken on my birthday exactly 60 years before I was born. I like them apples! I find the little crown on the apple in the sign funny. "The King of fruits, Eat plenty of them!"
He might not be able to eat the apple but he sure has a spiffy hat. Right out of Monty Python!
I think it's just cruel that the poor guy with his jaw wired shut had to pose with an apple. You'd think they'd at least give him some applesauce or something.
