Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

"Baltimore Fire of 1904. General view of South Baltimore." National Photo Company Collection glass negative, Library of Congress. View full size.
I like old books, and found one with a firsthand account of the fire published shortly after it happened. Some of the details were horrifying. It also showed how fire companies and police departments from four states and the Feds right up to the president offered assistance and sent men and equipment at a moment's notice. The railways cleared the tracks and gave trains delivering aid top priority.
In the left distance, somebody appears to have hung out their wash on a rooftop.
