Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

New York Giants pitcher Christy Mathewson. December 14, 1910. View full size. Gelatin silver print by Paul Thompson, one in a series of photos taken in the off-season for American Tobacco Co. trading cards.
Matty's always been my all-time favorite pitcher. No pitcher ever had the World Series he did in 1905. God bless him.
Christy has always been one of my idols. He didn't have a long life, but he was beloved enough for several.
