About the Photos

Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

White House Dog: 1926

White House Dog: 1926

September 23, 1926. "White House dog, medicine balls." And that's all they wrote. National Photo Company Collection glass negative. View full size.

Medicine Balls

Makes sense...that Coolidge was a real athlete.

Every dog needs a name

Calvin Coolidge owned three collies -- Prudence Prim, Rob Roy and Ruby Rough, an Airedale terrier named Paul Pry, two chows named Blackberry and Tiny Tim, a bulldog named Boston Beans, an Old English sheep dog named Calamity Jane and a wire fox terrier named Peter Pan.

Now if I could only figure out what that little guy is!

Silent Cal's White House Menagerie

This little guy is probably "Paul Pry (née Laddie Buck), an Airedale" given to the Coolidges. Calvin Coolidge is not widely remembered as an animal enthusiast, but like many presidential families, the Coolidges owned and/or were given an entire menagerie of creatures: "Peter Pan, a terrier; Paul Pry (née Laddie Buck), an Airedale; Calamity Jane, a sheepdog; Boston Beans, a bulldog; King Cole, a shepherd; Palo Alto, a birder; collies named Rob Roy (née Oshkosh), Prudence Prim, Ruby Rough, and Bessie; chows named Blackberry and Tiny Tim; canaries named Nip, Tuck, and Snowflake; cats named Bounder, Tiger, and Blacky; raccoons named Rebecca and Horace; Ebeneezer, a donkey; Smokey, a bobcat; Old Bill, a thrush; Enoch, a goose; a mockingbird; a bear; an antelope; a wallaby; a pygmy hippo; some lion cubs." This and more information about Presidents from Washington to George W. Bush and their pets can be found Here.
