About the Photos

Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

"Congressional Union for Woman Suffrage, 1916." One of the banners used in a memorial service for Inez Milholland, the lawyer who became a martyr to the suffrage movement following her death from anemia while campaigning for the 19th Amendment. Harris & Ewing Collection glass negative. View full size.

Great slogan

I've lived around D.C. for 4 years and still haven't seen a protest banner quite that catchy.

[The lines are from Henry Alford's lyrics to the hymn "Forward! Be Our Watchword." - Dave]

Suffragette City

I never realized Olive Oyl was a suffragette.

May the force be with me

I love her Princess Leia buns.

Forward into battle

I see she is armed with her hat pin--ready to go.

How sad...

This is the same banner that Inez carried in a Suffragette march in 1911.
