Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

Can anyone identify this dam? This photo is one of a trio purchased in northern California. I get dizzy just looking at the staircases clinging to the side of the cliff on the right. View full size.
I have no idea where this dam is, but the catwalk that is waaaay down on the dam would be a nightmare for anyone afraid of heights. The don't normally bother me, but THIS one would give me the heebie jeebies! There is a good reason I don't work on a dam--I don't want to go out on the modern equivalent of this!
