Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

A beautiful photo of my mother Noreen (at 19 years old) taken in the spring of 1940. A year later she married my father John, and two years later she would accompany him to the west coast of Canada in Victoria, B.C., where my dad served as sergeant in the Canadian army. In June of 1944 I would be born out there. They returned to Fort William Ontario(now Thunder Bay) in early 1945 and my Dad was then shipped off to England for another couple of years before the whole thing was over. This is one of my favorite photos of my mother. View full size.
Very pretty an tall. thanks for the image
(muy guapa y alta. Gracias por la imágen)
She is a very pretty girl. I do like the dress styles of this era.
My grandmother was named Noreen. Not a name you run across very often. Pretty name for a pretty girl!
Womens clothing of the late 1930 - 1940's era always had such great details, and the fabric was usually something interesting. Can't tell what the fabric might be, possibly wool, but it looks like velvet cuffs and collar. Shoulder pads, an empire bodice, with tucks. The skirt has princess lines and looks to have 6 gores, three in front at least, and has a nice flare.
She's a nicely dressed very pretty lady.
