Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

"Francis Sayre Jr., baby, with Woodrow Wilson." The President and new grandson in 1915, less than a year after the death of his wife Ellen. View full size.
Hey, I recognize that guy from the $100,000 bills in my wallet.
But seriously, this is a fantastic portrait. Wilson had his hands full with domestic issues and trying to stay out of the war in Europe, but this is such a serene family moment. Also looks like baby was in the middle of a yawn.
Grandpa Wilson has clearly been around babies before. He holds the baby closely and happily while the new dad balances him on a pillow. Let's hear it for grandfathers!
What a proud grandpa President Wilson must have been! The look on his face tells it all.
Judging from the photo of Dean Sayre in the National Cathedral in the previous post, it looks like he inherited his grandfather's looks pretty closely.
