George, Betty and Matt: 1903

A 1903 portrait made in Boston of my grandfather Matt as baby. His Aunt Betty is holding him, with his mother on the left in that fabulous hat. Her name was George -- really! I think the snow is a nice touch. View full size.

A beautiful song

This reminds me of one of my favorite songs, Photograph by Natalie Merchant and REM:

I found this photograph
Underneath broken picture glass
Tender face of black & white
Beautiful, a haunting sight
Looked into an angel's smile
Captivated all the while
From her hair and clothes she wore
I'd have placed her in between the wars.

Mme. George

Thanks for the additional photo of George. It appears that she just went on being lively, stylish and smart, and she's wearing her 1941 hat every bit as well as her 1903. My mother was also named for her father, Harry Maxwell Brown, but not quite so directly. After five daughters in a row, when my mother was born they named her Harriette Maxine (a middle name she never liked). And less than a year later, a boy at last -- Harry M. Jr.

Burning Questions Answered!

Shorpy readers are the best. I'm so glad everyone is enjoying George and Betty.

George was named after her father. She and Betty were two of five daughters and I guess there just had to be a George Jr. no matter what. And if you think George is hot, wait until you get a load of Aunt Viola!

As for how well they aged, I'm afraid I don't know about Betty but I do have this picture of George dated 1941. It's the most recent photo I've seen of her. Maybe you can still see a little bit of young George in her face.

The Thropp Sisters

Here we have Elphaba Thropp (Wicked Witch of the West), her son Liir Thropp, and her sister, Nessarose Thropp (Wicked Witch of the East).

The allusion is to two of Gregory Maguire's books, Wicked and Son of a Witch, where we learn that that Elphaba is really good, and that Galinda Upland (aka Glinda, the Good Witch) is, shall we say, not so good.

The musical Wicked is based on Maguire's book.

Stunned

This is a stunning photo. mesmerizing, beautiful, full of energy and life and soul ... AND awesome hats! Thanks for sharing!

Your Great-Grandmother Is Hot!

I've typed 246 bajillion words in my lifetime and this is the first time this particular combination of keys has ever been, um, banged (by me, or anyone on the planet):

"Your great-grandmother is hot!"

More than pretty faces

I can't stop staring at this photo. Both of them are more than just pretty faces. Their beauty seems to radiate from within. So many adjectives come to mind that I can't list them all but self-assurance, humor, warmth -- these are but a few. I would not, however, want to get on the wrong side of Betty.

Tagged

I think this should have a "pretty girls" tag.

Same-sex couple

If this photo were today then this could be the modern informed image of marriage and family.

Two Real Beauties

Of course I've always been a sucker for a girl with snow on her hat. And yes, they look like they were fun to be around.

Wow!

This is amazing. Thank you so much for posting it.

I think this is my favorite Shorpy photo, next to the Shorpy photos themselves.

How well did they age?

Any more pictures perhaps 20 or 30 years later of the ladies?

Snow Baby

Is it supposed to look like it's snowing in this pic? At first I thought the white marks were caused by damage to the photo but it looks like the "snow" has collected on the hat, shoulders, and arms of the subjects.

Mama George

Wonder if she was named after George Sand? It's definitely the women in this photograph which focus me. They look... intensely intelligent and somehow so very alive.

I think it's all in the eyes

Something about the expressions on all three faces, and the sparkle in their eyes just draw you in to this portrait. I can't stop staring at it. This is a great find! Thank you for sharing it.

Something tells me

These two were fun to be around. And if Shorpy ever takes a job somewhere else, we have a new mascot!

George, I hardly knew ye!

That is one of the best photos I've seen here. I really can't say why. I just love it.
