Kingsport, Tennessee, 1952. Broad St. at Center St. intersection, the main north-south/east-west intersection of the downtown business section. Broad St. was a perfect cruising street, a traffic circle on the north end and a U-turn arc on the south end at the depot. Four wide lanes for traffic and the businesses, except for news stands and theaters, closed by 6 pm. Photographer, Thomas McNeer, Jr. View full size.
Carithers department store is featured in the background of a scene in the movie "Peggy Sue Got Married", which was filmed, I believe in 1984 or 85. (It's possible that the filmmakers put the Carither's sign up on the building to make it appear as it did in the early 60's however.)
I'll bet that the Charles Store was a locally-owned department store, an extinct breed. Just down the pike from me in Petaluma, there was Carithers, of similar size and likewise in a prime downtown corner location and in an even more streamlined-moderne style building. The business itself went pffft probably in the 70s, I'd guess, but the building itself survives. But if you want me, I'll be over in the newsstand across the street.
