Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.
Thank you, I had a feeling this was taken in San Francisco. I have a few other photos from the same collection I'm pretty sure they are also from the bay area, I'll post them soon.
Behind the car is the back side of the Spreckels Temple of Music, the bandshell at the southwest end of the Music Concourse in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. The Temple, which was a gift of Claus Spreckels, the sugar magnate, was built in 1900. The car is near the entrance of the Japanese Tea Garden, which began as part of the 1894 California Mid-Winter International Exposition. The Music Concourse was originally the Grand Court of the Exposition.
