Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

Quite a style for the time; those shorts couldn't possibly be worn any higher!
Only four appear to be distance runners (no spikes). Looking at their expressions, along with one of them wearing a knee brace and another having taped ankles, they all appear extremely serious and hard-core.
I remembered seeing third from the right a couple of months ago in this photo of Woodberry Forest gymnasts. Turns out it was in fact, the same guy.
