About the Photos

Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Most were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

Mystery castle

Mystery castle

Photo found in an antique market in Lewes, West Sussex, England. Unidentified building on a beach. Women in late 19th century clothing. Bell tents. Possibly a bathing suit lying on the sand. The core of the building appears to be a cylindrical, flat-topped fort, but the oriental styled extensions suggest a more luxurious residence. The bow windows seem European.

Seaside castle

The fanciful architecture and its location suggest a Victorian-era seaside resort amusement pavilion rather than an actual castle or residence. There were scores of examples in England alone, a few of which survive. I haven't been able to track this one down, and it may not even be in England.
