About the Photos

Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

Heel, Boy: 1920

Fall 1920. Washington, D.C. "Queen Quality Boot Shop, F Street N.W." Flanked by Victrola stores and a multiplicity of Nippers. National Photo Co. View full size.

Plenty more Nippers inside!

Here's the inside of Ansell, Bishop and Turner from a previous Shorpy ...

Dueling Dealers

It is interesting to see two Victor Talking Machine dealers in nearly adjacent stores. Completion must have been fierce between Messieurs Ansell and Webster. They have both brought out the big dogs, particularly Ansell, who is displaying Victor's most expensive Victrola, one of the Period models that cost $1100 in 1920 gold dollars. You featured a nice interior view of the Ansell, Bishop and Turner store back in 2008, and I found a third image floating in cyberspace.

It's a Hudson

Judging by the triangle logos on the hubcaps, the car is a Hudson. Quite rakish with that sloping hood.

And what I wouldn't give to have one of those Nippers today; especially the big one guarding the door.

Gone to the Dogs

Can anyone find more than 24 Nippers, either complete or partial? Memories of the ambience of the old stores surpass anything found in shops today.

His Master's Dog

More than the November records are there. So is the November litter. I count 24 Victor Talking Machine Nipper dog statues/pictures in the windows, in four different sizes. Have I missed any?

Woof

Hey, I can see the Big Nipper from here.

Ghostly profile

This whole block is long gone, but the profile of this building seems to remain in the form of the vestigial property lines:
